It’s beautiful outside – no better way to end a gorgeous day than going to an art exhibit!

I’m having an exhibit with John Tebeau at the Sweet Lorraine Gallery in our Red Hook studio. Location is the giant Treasure Island Storage building – featuring an outstanding view of the Gowanus Expressway! Come say hello to the nation’s newest Superfund site and see some great paintings. Drinks are on us.

Date: Saturday, March 20, 2010
Time: 7-10 pm
Location: Sweet Lorraine Gallery, 183 Lorraine Street, Brooklyn, NY

Nostrand Park blog has some nice coverage of the exhibit, including an interview with curator Candice Chetta.

Clever and interesting work, but what struck me is seeing photos of many of these pieces was essentially the same as seeing the objects in person. I’ve seen the Bauhaus work in the next gallery several times but doubt I’ll be returning to see this exhibit. Once you “get” the concept behind the art, there’s not much left. Car cut in thirds and reassembled without the center. Four bikes connected by their head tubes and seat posts. Hanging whale skeleton inscribed with circles. You can easily visualize the work and it’s exactly what you’d imagine. Sometimes that’s not enough.

I was reading the New Yorker calendar section on the subway ride home tonight and was really happy to see a name I recognized! An exhibit by photographer Haley Jane Samuelson was profiled. I had the pleasure of posting some of her work on ArtinBrooklyn in April. She describes her images as “an embodiment of my own subconscious forces at work, mixed with real events.” The show is up until the end of the week at Hous Projects, 31 Howard Street.
